Plumbing for Success

A young Apprentice at New College Durham has achieved the coveted title of Best Plumbing Student in the North East region for 2004. Ian Sancaster, 18, a plumbing Apprentice at New College Durham has won the JB Wilkinson Shield from the Worshipful Company of Plumbing Masters for Best Student in the North East. Ian is now in his final year at New College Durham and was assessed for the award by the portfolio of work he produced for his NVQ Level 2 qualification. Ian has always wanted to learn a trade and as part of his Apprenticeship he is employed by D&J Franks in Esh, County Durham for 4 days a week and spends a day at New College Durham studying for his NVQ qualification. Ian said: "It is hard work combining college with work but it will be worth it in the end when I am a qualified plumber. I already train a Level 2 Apprentice at work and I would like to start my own business in a couple of years".

Simon Place, a plumbing lecturer at New College Durham, said: "Ian has produced a top rate portfolio for his NVQ Level 2 and I am delighted he has been rewarded for all his hard work. He is a conscientious student and has now progressed to NVQ Level 3". Ian was officially presented with his prize at the Newcastle Branch of the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE) by Mike Swallow, Master of the Worshipful Company of Plumbing, in the presence of Len Gold, President of the IPHE. This is the first time that New College Durham has won the JB Wilkinson Shield and it seems timely that it coincides with the new £35 million new build development at the College which includes impressive technology workshops with state-of-the-art plumbing facilities. Water Supply System

Definition:
The water supply system consists of the water service pipe, the water-distributing pipes, the necessary connecting pipes, fittings, control valves, and all appurtenances in or adjacent to the building or premises.

Septic Tank

Definition:
A watertight receptacle that receives the discharge of a building's sanitary drain system or part thereof and is designed and constructed so as to separate solid from the liquid, digest organic matter through a period of detention, and allow the liquids to discharge into the soil outside of the tank through a system of open-joint or perforated piping, or through a seepage pit.

Vent Stack

Definition:
The vertical vent pipe installed to provide air circulation to and from the drainage system and that extends through one or more stories.
