Penton Bolsters Mechanical Systems Construction Portfolio With Two Acquisitions

CLEVELAND,OH - APRIL 10, 2001 - Penton Media, Inc. (NYSE:PME) Penton Media Inc. (NYSE: PME) today bolstered its mechanical systems/construction portfolio with the acquisitions of Contractor, a monthly magazine for the domestic plumbing contractor market and Expo Instalaciones Para la Construccion, a trade show for the construction installation market in Latin America. Both become part of Penton’s Industry Media division.

Contractor magazine serves plumbing contractors nationally and strengthens Penton’s current mechanical systems and construction products while capitalizing on the recent growth in the residential kitchen and bath business. The magazine was purchased from Cahners Business Information in New York. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

"The synergy that exists between Contractor magazine and our existing portfolio, including Contracting Business which serves the HVACR industry, allows us to further build our integrated package of magazines serving the residential, commercial and industrial construction and mechanical systems marketplace," said James W. Zaremba, president of Penton Industry Media. "This is a great opportunity for Penton to expand into the plumbing sector through a strong title with a solid reputation."

Contractor will continue to be published monthly and operations will relocate to Penton’s Chicago office.

Expo Instalaciones Para la Construccion focuses on the installation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), safety, surveillance and fire systems as well as elevators, escalators, plumbing and hydraulics. The event was purchased from Agora Internacional SA de CV of Mexico City. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Expo Instalaciones adds a fourth trade show to Penton’s trade show portfolio in Mexico.
It will be co-located with Penton’s ACR Expo taking place Aug. 15-17, 2001, at the World Trade Center in Mexico City.

"The combination of these two important exhibitions provides HVAC contractors in the Latin American market with a one-stop shop for a full range of HVAC products and services," said Zaremba. "Contractors can now come to a single venue to do business with vendors, manufacturers and distributors of HVACR systems, tools, equipment and repairs, as well as suppliers for the safety, surveillance, elevator, escalator, plumbing and hydraulic installation industry, the primary exhibitor base at Expo Instalaciones. Our exhibitors will benefit from a larger, highly qualified buying audience. This is going to be a powerful combination event for this growing industry."

Exhibitor and attendee information for the shows can be obtained from Paul Brunet, director general of Penton’s international industrial events portfolio in Mexico City, MX at penton@terra.com.mx or Carmen Tijerina, operations manager in Monterrey, MX at 52 (8) 369 6862 or pentonoper@terra.com.mx.

Penton’s other trade shows in Mexico include: International Industrial Show, a broad-based event for the industrial sector, June 5-7, 2001; and Metalmecanica-USA, which serves the metalworking industry, Sept. 12-14, 2001. Both annual events are held in Monterrey
